Demilitarization Operations for Military Munitions Response Action at Hawthorne Army Depot Walker Lake Testing Range, NV – USACE Omaha District
KGS conducted demilitarization operations associated with Munitions and Explosives of Concern (MEC) and Material Potentially Presenting an Explosive Hazard (MPPEH) at this site. The Former Walker Lake Test Range classified as a Munitions Response Site (MRS) under the Military Munitions Response Program (MMRP). KGS demilitarized and disposed of Material Documented as Safe (MDAS) and scrap metal accumulated during routine clearance sweeps of Walker Lake and a 2015 RA performed along the southeastern shoreline of Walker Lake.
KGS prepared all planning documents for USACE acceptance prior to executing field work. Items previously inspected and verified as MDAS by the SUXOS and UXOQCS were previously stored in sealed and locked containers in the Range Holding Area. During execution of this project, each container was opened, the MDAS removed, and items resembling munitions were demolished such that the item no longer resembled military ordnance. Demilitarization activities were performed by qualified UXO Technicians III/II/I with oversight by a SUXOS and a UXOQCS/UXOSO. KGS prepared and submitted all required final disposition documentation. A total of 182,505 pounds (lbs) of MDAS and scrap metal was released for recycling, including 23,205 lbs of aluminum, 154,560 lbs of steel, and 4,740 lbs of mixed metals.
KGS received “Excellent” performance ratings for quality; schedule; customer satisfaction; management; and safety.
